World War II was over and America's industry was poised to put it into high gear. The railroads were ready to replace their aging steam engines with new diesel locomotives. The F-7 was the logical choice because it was an improved version of the proven F-3. The 1500 h.p. model allowed railroads flexibility by using multiple units when necessary. EMD answered the call by pumping out more than 3800 A&B units in less than 4 years ( a number greater than all previous 'F' units combined!). THese were used in bot passenger and freight consists.
